Grope Lane

This was one of the first paintings I did when I moved to Shrewsbury from Aberystyth in the mid-nineties.

The narrow passage Grope Lane leads up a steep incline from the town's new square to the old one - one of the oldest parts of the town. There seems to be some debate about the origins of the passage's name. It may have come from the poor lighting in the narrow path or from the dubious trade of the women that frequented it.
